New Year ER (amended)

New Year's Day was an exciting day for us. We were finally building the gingerbread house that our friend Melissa gave us as an early Christmas present. Marisol went into the kitchen for something and Joel was to follow, but he fell backwards off his chair and hit his head on the ceramic tile floor. Blood and chaos ensued, and we ended up in the ER of the hospital. As a fan of ER during it fifteen and final season, I found it interesting to see what a real ER is like. Since it involved a head injury, the hospital staff and triage nurse attended to us within a half-hour of our arrival. Then we head back into Room B for evaluation before being taken into a treatment room.
There the nurse wrapped Joel in "swaddling clothes" to keep him from moving during the stiching process. I entertained him with songs and stories. At one point the nurses and doctors all rushed to help a patient whose heart had stopped. I was glad not to be that patient as it took minutes to get the defibrillator working. Not sure of the outcome, and I didn't want to ask. We also met a woman who blew a hole in her Croc and foot with a high-pressure water hose. OUCH!

When we arrived home, Joel fell asleep on the sofa. It had been a long day.

The following day Amelia, Joel and friends watch the Teletubbies Christmas show when they woke up this morning.

Joel has the same winning smile, even with a head injury. Here he was displaying his "baby banana" from the recent bunch of bananas harvested from our jungle. Joel is a good patient and a good son. He made us all proud. We also thank the Lord for taking care of Joel because things can always be worse than they are.
