Farnsworth Forum Winter 2017



Greetings from the snowy Poconos of PA! As a family we have been enjoying the winter weather with six snow days so far!  God has granted us time to play outside, tobogganing, hiking and building snowmen.




Saludos desde el “Polo Norte” de Pennsilvania.  Como familia hemos disfrutado este invierno.  Dios nos ha dado bastante tiempo para jugar afuera, haciendo caminatas y construyendo muñecos de nieve.

Thanks to a generous scholarship, Joel and Amelia study at Canaan Christian Academy, which has been a blessing for them.  Joel’s classmates elected him as their chaplain, and he leads the eighth graders in a daily morning devotion.  Amelia was chosen as the December fifth grade student of the month.  Both of them continue to swim at the Greater Scranton YMCA, along with their five-year-old brothers Jacob and Elias, learning to swim for the first time.

 

Gracias a una beca generosa, Joel y Amelia están estudiando en Canaan Christian Academy, una bendición para ellos.  Los compañeros de Joel le eligieron como capellán y él les guía en un tiempo devocional cada mañana.  Amelia fue escogida como Mejor Estudiante del Mes de Diciembre.  Los dos siguen nadando en la YMCA de Scranton, juntos con sus hermanos de cinco años (Jacob y Elías) que están aprendiendo a nadar por primera vez.

The fall months took us to several churches in PA, including a missions conference in Philadelphia and a missions day at Ned’s home church in Birdsboro, PA.  Sometimes we fit in a little site seeing along the way.




Durante el otoño estuvimos en algunas iglesias en PA, entre ellas, una conferencia de misiones en Filadelfia y un Día de Misiones en la iglesia en Birdsboro donde Ned asistía como niño.  También pudimos visitar a algunos sitios históricos.

It is always a pleasure to meet new people and share our passion for missions with them.  At a church in Reading in January Ned shared the story and legacy of Jim Elliot and his four friends to celebrate the 61st anniversary of their martyrdom in the Ecuadorian jungle.




Siempre es un honor conocer a nuevas personas y compartir nuestra pasión para las misiones con ellos.  En una de las iglesias en Reading Ned compartió la historia y el legado de Jim Elliot para celebrar el aniversario de 61 años de sus muertes en la selva del Ecuador.

Also during the fall we joined Ned’s siblings in cleaning out his parents’ house.  Although it proved to be a tiring and emotional project, we thank God that we could be here on furlough to offer our hands and hearts to help get the job done.  We rejoice that Ned’s parents are enjoying their new lives in the independent living area of a retirement community nearby.  Would you pray for them and for Marisol’s parents as well?


In many ways this picture of Ned’s empty room symbolizes our role as missionaries in which our lives must focus not on earthly things but on proclaiming God’s eternal life (Luke 9:59-60).  Please pray for our family that we can make our lives count for His glory as we allow Him to work through us.

También durante el otoño ayudamos a los hermanos de Ned en la tarea de limpiar y desocupar la casa de sus padres.  Aunque era un proyecto cansado y emocional, le damos gracias a Dios que pudimos estar aquí para ofrecer nuestros corazones y nuestras manos a cumplir con este trabajo.  Nos regocijamos que a los padres de Ned les gusta su nuevo departamento.  Hace una semana el papá de Ned se operó para ponerle una prótesis en la cadera.  ¿Por favor podrían orar por los padres de Ned y también por los padres de Marisol?  
 

En algunos sentidos esta foto del dormitorio vacío de Ned cuando era niño simboliza nuestro papel como misioneros.  Nuestras vidas deben enfocarse no en cosas de este mundo sino en la proclamación de la vida eterna en Dios (Lucas 9:59-60).   Oren por favor por nuestra familia que podamos vivir nuestras vidas para la gloria de Dios y permitirle a Él obrar a través de nosotros.


Currently we are seeking opportunities to share and visit our remaining supporting churches and hoping to connect with new churches and individuals with the goal of finding $1000 in additional monthly support.  We have not officially sought a support increase since our last home ministry assignment (2010-2011).  Since then our family has grown by two people!  Please join us in praying for God’s provision.  In you have any questions about this, please ask!

Goodbye Guam, Alii Palau!

Here is a recap of the final days of our friends Hiob and Leah and their children Micah and Jireh in Guam. They have returned to Palau where Hiob will serve as senior pastor of the Koror Evangelical Church. We all started together at PIBC back in fall 2006 and we have worked together, laughed together, cried together, prayed together, and grown together. Although it is hard to say goodbye, we know that they will be a blessing to the Church in Palau, and we find comfort in the words of the Michael W. Smith song "Friends": friends are friends forever if the Lord's the Lord of them. Amen! We had a BBQ in their honor on campus at the beginning of June before the Thai mission team left. Delight posed with Micah and Hiob during a break from barbecuing. He is a fantastic barbecuer. Notice he's even holding the tongs, to a barbecuer what a hammer is to a carpenter. Amelia says, "Goodbye, Long Hair!"

Amelia finally had her hair cut after six years of no cutting. She likes her new haircut and enjoys combing her own hair for the first time ever. She wants to donate her hair for child cancer patients, and we are pleased that she wants to share with others. Here are some pictures before and after.

GOOD THINGS HAPPENING 3

 A little background to this story.  I have been a fan of The Waltons from the beginning of the series.  In 2017 I attended the 45th anniversary celebration of the show in Schuyler, Virginia, the small hamlet where the series' creator Earl Hamner, Jr., was born and raised.  Perhaps I can share a bit more about that in a future post. During that weekend in March 2017 I met Reen Christie Bula (a/k/a Tammi Bula), who played John-Boy's love interest Marcia Woolery in the early seasons. Here is a shot of Reen and me, As well as a shot of all the cast member in attendance at the reunion with the exception of Michael Learned who went to bed early due to a play appearance the following day. During the weekend Reen, her husband Gordon and I shared time together, and she shared with me her testimony, how she came to the Lord through the witness of friends (she was working as an RN at the time) and how she saw the sign of Pi in the sky one day which prompted her to check out John 3:14-16
