Miep Gies passed away at 100 on January 11, 2010. Anne Frank's protector during the Nazi occupation of Holland, Gies helped to shelter the Frank family until an unknown informer (to this day) told the Nazis. Gies and her husband were spared when the Franks were carted off to the concentration camps. In her diary, which Gies did not burn, Anne Frank wrote that "we are never far from Miep's thoughts." In the late 80s Miep cowrote the book
Remembering Anne Frank which was made into a documentary. "Not a day goes by that I do not grieve for them," said Miep at that time. May we all grieve man's inhumanity to man, past, present and future.
Art Clokey, the creator of Gumby, Pokey et al, succumbed on January 8, 2010, at the age of 88. He was adopted by the noted hymnwrite Joseph Waddell Clokey. Clokey also created the claymation
Davey and Goliath for the Lutheran Church of America. I remember watching that show early on Sunday mornings during my childhood in PA.
Lee Archer, Jr., a member of the Tuskegee Airmen during World War 2, shot down three German fighters over Hungary in October 1944, only to return home to segregation in postwar America, died on January 27 at 90. In October 2005, Mr. Archer and two fellow Tuskegee veterans visited an air base at Balad, Iraq, to meet with 700 servicemen from a successor unit to his all-black outfit. “This is the new Air Force,” he told The Associated Press. In the dining room, he saw “black, white, Asian, Pacific Islanders, people from different parts of Europe. This,” he said, “is what America is.” Well put, Mr. Archer. May we never go back.
The producer of one of the kindest, gentlest sitcoms in American TV history has died. Aaron Tuben, who produced "The Andy Griffith Show" as well as its spinoff "Gomer Pyle" passed away on January 19 at 92. Who will ever forget the theme song and the beautiful portrait of the relationship between Griffith and his TV son, Ron Howard? They don't make shows like that anymore!
